The reaction rate of the methyl 2-pyridylacetate with pyridine compounds is slow, but it reacts quickly with thionyl chloride and hydrochloric acid. Methyl 2-pyridylacetate also reacts with nucleophiles such as methyl anthranilate to form the corresponding quinolizine derivatives.
