Mestanolone is a naturally occurring androgen. The physiological effects of mestanolone are similar to those of other androgens, including the promotion of muscle growth, increased fat breakdown, and the development of male secondary sex characteristics. Mestanolone has been shown to be effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease and may be used as an alternative to oxandrolone for the treatment of osteoporosis. Mestanolone has also been shown to have thermodynamic properties that are similar to oxandrolone and testosterone. It is an endogenous metabolite of oxandrolone and can be synthesized from testosterone by adding an alpha-methyl group at position 17 on the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. Mestanolone is also used in combination with sodium citrate for sample preparation before mass spectrometry analysis in medical research.
