3-Methylstyrene is a polymorphic substance that can exist as three different isomers, or structural forms. The different configurations of 3-methylstyrene are dependent on the exposure to light and the presence of calcium stearate, which serves as a polymerization initiator. 3-Methylstyrene has been shown to bind cationic surfactants and fatty acids, producing solutes that are soluble in water. It also has an aromatic hydrocarbon structure with a high molecular weight, which makes it an excellent candidate for use as a polymerization initiator in the production of polymaleic acid.
