It can be oxidized with calcium stearate to form 2-methylhexanal, which can then undergo a chain reaction with hydrogen fluoride to form trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and water vapor. The oxidation of 2-methylhexane is catalysed by an oxidation catalyst, such as copper(II) oxide. The mechanism for this oxidation has been studied and found to be kinetic, low energy, and driven by steric interactions between the acyl chain and the metal surface.
