Description:

Molybdenum trioxide is a molybdenum compound that has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent. Molybdenum trioxide is used in wastewater treatment because it is electrochemically inert and can be used over a wide range of pH values. The mechanism of action for this compound is not well understood, but it is thought to involve the oxidation of sulfides or organic matter. Molybdenum trioxide has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against many infectious bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Salmonella enterica. It also has activity against Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Molybdenum trioxide can be synthesized by heating sodium carbonate with molybdic acid.
