1-Methyl-3-propylimidazolium lodide is an ionic liquid that is a colorless liquid with a melting point of −35 °C. It has been shown to have a phase transition temperature of −10 °C, which is the highest among ionic liquids. 1-Methyl-3-propylimidazolium lodide is soluble in water and can be used as an electrolyte due to its high ionic conductivity. The hydrogen bonding present in the liquid makes it able to dissolve many different types of molecules, such as polymers and salts. This property also makes this ionic liquid useful for solar cells and photocurrent devices because it can absorb water vapor. 1-Methyl-3-propylimidazolium lodide has been shown to have electrochemical properties similar to lithium salts, but may be more environmentally friendly due to its low toxicity and high solubility in water.
