Monocrotaline N-oxide is a metabolite of monocrotaline. Monocrotaline is an alkaloid that is found in plants and has been used as a rodenticide and insecticide. The LC-MS/MS method was developed for the analysis of monocrotaline N-oxide. The method is selective, sensitive, and accurate. It has been shown to be effective in the detection of retrorsine and retronecine esters in rat liver microsomes. Monocrotaline N-oxide has been shown to have skin cancer promoting effects in rats when applied to skin at doses of 400 ppm or greater. This metabolite also has an effect on uptake by human liver cells, which may be due to its ability to form a matrix with proteins present in the cell membrane.
