Its preparative method is based on the use of phosphine as an agent to produce metallacycles, which are then reduced with hydrogen gas or sodium borohydride in the presence of a proton source, such as tetraethylammonium hydroxide or potassium tertiary butylate. 3-Methoxy-3-methylbut-1-yne can also be used for the preparation of hexanes by reacting with acidified ethylene glycol in the presence of a base such as triethylamine or pyridine.
