Description:

Manganese (IV) oxide is a reactive metal that is used in the production of sulfuric acid, fertilizers, and other chemicals. It has been found to have antioxidant effects and can be used for the treatment of oxidative injury. Manganese (IV) oxide has also been shown to have a protective effect on cells against radiation by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and protecting cell membranes from damage. Manganese (IV) oxide nanoparticles are used as a model system for studying brain function, due to their ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Manganese oxides are also used in wastewater treatment, because they react with nitrogen compounds and produce ammonia gas which can be removed by a scrubber.
