Mesaconic acid is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reagent that contains fumaric acid and dinucleotide phosphate. It has been used in PCR to increase the specificity of DNA amplification by reducing nonspecific binding. Mesaconic acid also has an antioxidant effect due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and inhibit lipid peroxidation in vitro. The redox potentials of mesaconic acid allow it to act as a proton donor or acceptor, depending on the presence or absence of a metal hydroxide. This property allows mesaconic acid to bind covalently with drug transporter proteins that have metal-binding sites, which may then be used for targeted delivery of drugs into cells. Mesaconic acid has also been shown to have neurotrophic effects in various model systems, including dopaminergic neurons, PC12 cells, and cultured cortical neurons.
