Methyl 4-phenylbutyrate is a clinical drug that has been used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. It is an acidic drug that binds to the epoxide hydrolase and inhibits cholesterol synthesis, leading to a reduction in serum levels. Methyl 4-phenylbutyrate also inhibits the trifluoroacetic acid-catalysed debromination of phenols and the homologous series of biochemical reactions. However, it does not bind to chloride ions.
