It is a colourless liquid with a characteristic smell of almonds. 2-Methylidenepropanedinitrile is an intermediate in the synthesis of polyvinylidene chloride and other polymers, as well as in the production of methyl methacrylate monomers. 2-Methylidenepropanedinitrile can be synthesized by reacting vinylidene chloride with hydrochloric acid at high temperature and pressure, or by copolymerizing n-dimethyl formamide and sodium carbonate. The copolymerization reaction can also be carried out using anionic polymerization with cationic polymerization catalysts such as lithium chloride. Copolymers are made from fatty acid esters, which are derived from natural fats like coconut oil or palm oil.
