Methyl 2-keto-L-gulonate is a monomer that is used in the synthesis of polymers. It can be prepared by a two-step process, starting with the reaction of methyl 2-ketoglutarate and sodium carbonate. In the first step, methyl 2-ketoglutarate reacts with an acid catalyst to form a keto ester product. This product then undergoes hydrolysis in order to produce the desired monomer, methyl 2-keto-L-gulonate. The reaction rate increases as temperature increases and decreases as pH increases. Reaction time also affects the yield of product; longer times result in lower yields because some reactants are consumed. Methyl 2-keto-L-gulonate can be purified by chromatography using a solvent like methanol or acetonitrile and then reisolation by precipitation with ammonium sulfate or deionized water.
