2-Methyl-2-nitropropane is a molecule that participates in metathesis reactions. It can be produced from the reaction of nitromethane with methyl ethyl ketone at low temperatures. The mechanism of this reaction has been determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and computational modeling. This compound is a substrate for the integrin receptor, which leads to activation of a signaling pathway that induces an inflammatory response. 2-Methyl-2-nitropropane has been shown to inhibit influenza virus replication in vitro, and may also have therapeutic potential against HIV infection. The products of the metathesis reaction are unknown; however, they are thought to be nitroalkanes or nitro compounds.
