Menaquinone 9 (MK-9) is a vitamin K2 that is important for blood clotting and bone health. It is synthesized by gut bacteria and can be found in animal products such as eggs, milk, and cheese. MK-9 has been shown to be effective in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as osteoporosis, hypercholesterolemia, and atherosclerosis. The most common symptom of MK-9 deficiency is easy bruising. Menaquinone 9 has been identified in the sequences of human DNA. This vitamin K2 binds to fatty acids on cell membranes to form phospholipids, which are essential for cell membrane structure and function. Menaquinone 9 is also involved in the synthesis of heme proteins and carotenoids. The presence of MK-9 can be determined using monoclonal antibodies or erythrocyte surface glycoproteins from type strains that are phylogenetically related to the organism being tested.
