2-(3-Methoxyphenyl)ethanol is a vitamin that is an intermediate in the synthesis of 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. It has been shown to regulate tyrosinase activity and melanin production, which helps prevent hyperpigmentation. This compound can be found in the plant genus Rhodiola and is also produced by yeast cells grown on tyrosine. 2-(3-Methoxyphenyl)ethanol acts as a competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of melanin, and inhibits melanogenesis in cultured mouse skin cells. In addition, 2-(3-Methoxyphenyl)ethanol can be used for the treatment of vitiligo.
