Methyl desoxycholate is a cell lysis reagent that is used in vitro to produce tissue culture cells for biological research. It has been shown to have potent preventative and physiological activities on liver steatosis, which may be due to its ability to suppress the synthesis of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Methyl desoxycholate is synthesized by the reaction of an alcohol with a chloroformate. This reaction produces an ester with a hydroxyl group and an asymmetric carbon atom. The asymmetric carbon atom can be used in an asymmetric synthesis to produce methyl desoxycholate.
