3-Methylcholanthrene (3MC) is a mutagen that has been shown to be carcinogenic in animals. It binds to the DNA, which causes breaks in the DNA strands and leads to mutations. 3MC is also an inducer of tumor formation and is active against murine sarcoma virus. 3MC has been shown to induce enzyme activities in vitro and can be used to study the effects of enzyme inhibitors on enzymatic activity. 3MC has been shown to have potent inducers of tumor formation, especially when administered at high doses. The potent tumor-promoting effect may be due to its ability to bind with DNA and inhibit the synthesis of RNA, leading to increased proliferation of hepatocyte-like cells.
