Metoprolol is a benzothiazepine derivative. It is used for the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris. Metoprolol is metabolized to inactive products by conjugation with glucuronic acid, but also undergoes hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases. It has been shown that metoprolol succinate can be prepared in high yield by an asymmetric synthesis using a chromatographic method. The clinical use of metoprolol has been studied in relation to blood pressure, concentration-time curves, heart disease, reaction vessel, low energy, plasma concentration-time curve, hydroxy methyl group and drug interactions. The powder diffraction spectrum of metoprolol succinate shows that it is a polymer with a molecular weight of 526 Da and a polydispersity index (PDI) of 1.06.
