Description:

Mirex is a chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticide that binds to calcium, which is required for normal cell function. Mirex has been shown to be carcinogenic in mice and is classified as a probable human carcinogen. Mirex is also toxic to humans with prolonged exposure, causing liver lesions in women. It has been shown that the accumulation of mirex in tissues was related to the duration of exposure, with CD-1 mice accumulating higher concentrations than rats. The binding of mirex to calcium was found to be reversible, suggesting that it can be removed from tissue by chelating agents such as EDTA or citrate. Mirex binds more tightly to membranes than other compounds due to its hydrophobic nature and high lipophilicity. This property makes it useful for wastewater treatment because it can bind substances like anhydrous sodium and zirconium oxide before they are released into the environment.
