Mitonafide is a nitro-containing, biocompatible polymer that has significant cytotoxicity. It can be used as an anti-cancer compound that induces apoptosis, or programmed cell death, of cancer cells by binding to pro-apoptotic protein. Mitonafide also inhibits the growth of infectious agents, such as bacteria and fungi. Mitonafide binds to the DNA duplexes and prevents the progression of dna synthesis in the nucleus. This drug is toxic and should not be administered without first determining if there are any interactions with other drugs that are being taken by the patient.
