Trans-Muconic acid is a water-soluble, volatile organic compound that is used as an analytical method to measure the concentration of benzene in wastewater. The presence of trans-muconic acid in wastewater can be attributed to the oxidation of benzene by benzoate. This reaction produces the molecule trans,trans-muconic acid, which may be detected by an electrochemical detector. Trans-muconic acid may also be formed by reaction with trifluoroacetic acid or s-phenylmercapturic acid. The toxicity studies on rats show that trans,trans-muconic acid causes liver and kidney damage at higher doses.
