Muscarine iodide is a cholinergic agonist that binds to the acetylcholine receptor, which is found in neurons. Muscarine iodide has been shown to decrease the production of proinflammatory cytokines in microglia cells and may be used as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. The acetylation of histone proteins by muscarine iodide was investigated using Sk-N-SH cells. This study showed that muscarine iodide inhibits acetylation of histones H3 and H4 at lysine residues, which are key regulators of gene expression. Muscarine iodide also binds to CB2 receptors and can be used as a novel pharmacological treatment for inflammation.
