Myristicin is a natural organic compound that belongs to the class of heterocyclic compounds. Myristicin has been shown to have antimicrobial potential in vitro, with an MIC value of 0.25-1 µg/mL against Gram-positive bacteria and 1-2 µg/mL against Gram-negative bacteria. Myristicin also has the ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells through activation of bcl-2 protein and inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α. Myristicin has been shown to be effective in preventing allergy symptoms by inhibiting histamine release from mast cells, which may be due to its inhibitory effects on sorbitol dehydrogenase activity. The compound also has a relaxant effect on the rat urinary bladder and can cause relaxation of the rat ileum.
