2-Methyl-1-butanol is a colorless liquid with a pleasant odor. It is a byproduct of the fermentation process and has been shown to inhibit locomotor activity in mice. 2-Methyl-1-butanol also inhibits the activities of several enzymes, including amylase, lipase, and esterase. This compound is stable at room temperature and does not react with other substances. It has a linear calibration curve and can be used for analytical purposes. 2-Methyl-1-butanol has two hydroxyl groups, one on each end of the molecule, which can form hydrogen bonds to other molecules. The fatty acid chain in this compound may also help to bind more hydrogen bonds than other compounds with shorter chains do. The high degree of unsaturation in 2-methyl butanol leads to thermal expansion properties that are greater than those of ethyl decanoate or methyl ethyl acetate.
