Tetraphenylporphyrin is a highly conjugated molecule that has the ability to reversibly change between two stable forms. The redox potentials of the two forms are different, which can be used as a measure of the phase transition temperature. Tetraphenylporphyrin is also sensitive to kinetic energy and can be used as an optical sensor. It undergoes a Langmuir adsorption isotherm in human serum due to covalent linkages with proteins and other molecules. Tetraphenylporphyrin has been shown to have electrochemical properties that can be related to its conformational properties and thermodynamic data. The x-ray crystal structure of tetraphenylporphyrin bound with ferricyanide has been determined and it was found that there are three binding sites on the porphyrin molecule for ferricyanide ions. This suggests that this compound may act as a chemical sensor for iron ions in solution.
