The conversion of calcium folate to tetrahydrofolate occurs inside cells and requires an optimal reaction time and chloride ion concentration. Calcium folate has been shown to be an effective treatment for hyperhomocysteinemia in patients with defects in MTHFR, which are enzymes involved in converting folic acid into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. This drug also has been shown to normalize homocysteine levels in individuals with MTHFR polymorphisms, or genetic variations that affect the function of enzymes involved in metabolism.
