Monensin is an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting bacterial enzymes. Monensin has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzyme activities in quillaja saponaria, which are involved in energy metabolism, viral replication and protein synthesis. Monensin has also been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in calf-thymus DNA, a process that is used to amplify small fragments of DNA from a template sample. Monensin has been shown to have toxicological effects on cells and may cause cellular necrosis as well as inhibition of cellular respiration. Monensin is able to kill bacteria by interfering with the cell membrane and inhibiting protein synthesis.
