Product Information
- Benzoic acid, 2-methoxy-4-methyl-, methyl ester
Methyl 2-methoxy-4-methylbenzoate is a formic acid derivative that is used in organic synthesis and as a precursor to other organic compounds. Methyl 2-methoxy-4-methylbenzoate is synthesized from formic acid and phenylacetonitrile by raney nickel reduction, followed by demethylation with hydrochloric acid. It can be analyzed using techniques such as thermodynamic, NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and GC/MS. Methyl 2-methoxy-4-methylbenzoate has been postulated to react with the anion of octaketide in order to yield a benzoate product via an ionic mechanism. The protonated intermediate is then deprotonated and the resulting resonance stabilized cation reacts with the anion of octaketide to produce methyl 2-methoxy-4-methylbenzoate.
