Description:Mordant Blue 3 is a metal chelate that has been used as a metal stain in histology. It is the monosodium salt of cetylpyridinium, which contains a hydroxyl group and a cyanine dye. The metal ion from the mordant binds to the dye and forms a complex that stains cells and cell nuclei blue. Mordant Blue 3 reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to form an intermediate compound, which reacts with hydrogen peroxide to create free radicals that bind to the DNA in the cell nucleus. These free radicals react with the DNA, changing its conformation and causing it to break down, resulting in a loss of cell viability. Mordant Blue 3 has been used as an analytical method for determining enzyme activities in human serum by measuring optical density at 450 nm.
