5-Methyl-1,10-phenanthroline is a compound that has been shown to bind to physiological levels of copper. It binds strongly to the Cu(II) ion and can be used as a potential treatment for cancer. 5-Methyl-1,10-phenanthroline also has antioxidative activity and can be used to scavenge free radicals. The binding constants of 5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline with copper (II) are strong enough for it to be considered an ancillary ligand in binding experiments involving Cu(II). This molecule has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis by binding to DNA.
