This drug is also able to bind to metal ions with nitrogen atoms, such as copper and zinc, which may be useful for cancer treatments. 2-Methyl-1,10-phenanthroline has also been shown to have anti-tumor activity in prostate carcinoma cells when used as a ternary complex with hypophosphorous acid and anhydrase.
