N-Methylindolyl-3-acetate is a serine protease inhibitor that binds to the active site serine of butyrylcholinesterase. It is used in clinical settings as an antidote for organophosphate poisoning. N-Methylindolyl-3-acetate binds to the active site serine of butyrylcholinesterase, which is essential for the hydrolysis of choline esters. The binding prevents substrate binding, thereby stabilizing and slowing down the rate of hydrolysis. This drug also slows down the rate of reaction by increasing the hydration level around it, which subsequently increases its kinetic and decreases its hydration. The substrate concentration also plays a role in how quickly a reaction will occur because there needs to be enough substrate molecules for it to work on.
