2-Methyl-5-nitrophenol is an organometallic compound that is synthesized from methyl alcohol and 3-nitrobenzyl alcohol. It has a high reactivity with water, leading to the formation of nitrous acid. 2-Methyl-5-nitrophenol can be used as a synthetic substrate for the synthesis of various nitro compounds, such as nitrotoluene. This compound has been shown to be toxic to aquatic organisms when it enters wastewater, and may cause ischemic reperfusion injury in humans. 2-Methyl-5-nitrophenol also reacts with oxygen in the environment to produce carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, and nitrous acid. This compound can be metabolized by bacteria into a number of metabolic products including 2-methylphenol, phenylhydroxylamine, and hydroxylamine.
