Maleic acid monoethyl ester is a glutathione reductase inhibitor that inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species. It has been shown to have efficacy in treating congestive heart failure and bowel disease. Maleic acid monoethyl ester is used as a fluorescence probe in vitro assays, which are used to measure glutathione activity. It also binds to the ryanodine receptor, which is involved in regulating cellular physiology and energy metabolism. Maleic acid monoethyl ester also reacts with methyl ethyl maleate, an electron donor, to form an osmium complex that can be detected by electron microscopy using a reaction solution containing 2-ethoxyethanol and potassium ferricyanide.
