Methyl 3-nitrobenzoate is a nitro compound that has a benzene ring with a dihedral angle of 120°. It is synthesized by condensation of 3-nitrophthalic acid and biphenyl, followed by catalytic hydrogenation to reduce the nitro group to an amino group. The methyl group is then substituted with a carboxyl group in the presence of base. Methyl 3-nitrobenzoate is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate in the synthesis of azilsartan, which is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist used in the treatment of high blood pressure.
