4-Methylesculetin is a natural compound that has shown antiinflammatory activity. It inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, by inhibiting the enzymes that produce these substances. 4-Methylesculetin also has an effect on the matrix of the bowel, which is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit dextran sulfate. This compound may also have anticancer properties because it inhibits DNA polymerase and protein synthesis in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs). The effect of 4-methylesculetin on PMNLs is concentration dependent, with lower concentrations inhibiting cell proliferation and higher concentrations inducing cytotoxicity.
