4-Methyl-DL-tryptophan is a natural amino acid that is synthesized in the body. It is not present in the diet, but can be synthesized from l-tryptophan. 4-Methyl-DL-tryptophan is a repressor of tryptophan biosynthesis and transport, which blocks uptake and inhibits germination of conidia. This drug has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of anthranilic acid, an intermediate in the biosynthesis pathway for tryptophan. In vitro studies have shown that this drug binds to regulatory sites on d-tryptophan synthase, preventing its activity.
