O-Methyl-D-prolinol is a molecule that belongs to the class of pharmaceutical drugs. It is synthesized by the alkylation of propiophenone with trifluoromethylated methyl iodide. O-Methyl-D-prolinol has been shown to inhibit the growth of P. aeruginosa, a bacterium that causes chronic respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis patients. This drug blocks bacterial DNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme OMP decarboxylase and blocking the formation of dUMP from dUTP. O-Methyl-D-prolinol has also been shown to be stereoselective, meaning it binds preferentially to one chiral form (S) of its target enzyme, while not binding at all to its mirror image (R). This allows for selective inhibition against bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics.
