The asymmetric synthesis of mandelate is a high-value process that can be achieved by the use of a kinetic resolution. The kinetic resolution is an important tool for the production of mandelate and other chiral drugs. The reaction rate depends on the substrate concentration and reaction time. L-Tartaric acid, a thermophilic α subunit, has been used as a catalyst in this process. The optimal reaction time is 20 hours at 100°C.
