Indolecarboxaldehyde is a phytoalexin that can be found in plants such as crucifers, which are used for the production of food. Indolecarboxaldehyde has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. Indolecarboxaldehyde also has been shown to have an anti-cancer effect on human cell lines, which is likely due to its ability to induce apoptosis. Indolecarboxaldehyde has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by binding with DNA and inhibiting transcription and replication. It also inhibits cell proliferation through a number of mechanisms, including inhibition of protein synthesis, induction of oxidative stress, or inhibition of DNA synthesis. The mechanism for this inhibition is not yet known.
