Methyl 2-hydroxyisobutyrate (MHIBA) is a compound that is found in nature. It has been synthetically produced by reacting formamide with dibutyltin oxide. The reaction of MHIBA with magnesium leads to the formation of a lamellar phase, which is an ordered structure composed of layers of molecules. The mass spectrometric analysis of this compound reveals the presence of a hydroxy group and an acetaldehyde group, as well as a hydrogen bond between the two. The dehydration reaction time for this molecule is between 3 and 5 minutes at 100 degrees Celsius.
