Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate is a white solid with a molecular weight of 138.14 and a melting point of -3.9°C. It is soluble in water, alcohols, ethers, and glycerol. Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate is used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and as an electrolyte in electrochemical applications. It has been shown to have biological properties that may be due to its ability to release hydrogen fluoride at high pH levels (pH >8). This chemical has also been evaluated for use as a structural material for the construction of zirconium oxide-based electrodes for use in electrochemical cells. Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate undergoes hydrolysis reactions in solution with water vapor and fluoresces under ultraviolet light.
