2-Methyl-5-hydroxybenzoic acid is a metabolite of benzene. It is produced by the demethylation of benzene in the human body and can be found in urine samples. It is also created by hydrolysis of benzoate, which can be found in foods such as apples, cranberries, prunes, peaches, and plums. 2-Methyl-5-hydroxybenzoic acid has been shown to cause cancer in lab animals exposed to it through inhalation or ingestion. The compound is also a byproduct of radiation and mesitylene synthesis. 2-Methyl-5-hydroxybenzoic acid is used as an intermediate for the production of dienone and radical coupling products.
