1-Methyl-1-tosylmethyl isocyanide (MTIC) is a synthetic compound that inhibits the farnesyl protein transferase, which is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of cholesterol. MTIC inhibits the conversion of farnesyl pyrophosphate to geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate. This inhibition prevents the formation of geranylgeranylated proteins in cells and has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and induce apoptosis in some types of cancer cells. MTIC also has an antagonistic effect on tosylmethyl, which may be due to its ability to compete for binding sites on the receptor.
