Merocyanine 540 is a fluorescent probe that has been used to study the biological properties of basic proteins. It is cell specific, and can be used to study the ryanodine receptor in HL-60 cells and human osteosarcoma cells. Merocyanine 540 has been shown to cause apoptosis in these cells. The fluorescence of merocyanine 540 can be monitored using synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, which allows for the visualization of protein-protein interactions. Merocyanine 540 has also been employed as a tool for studying infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and malaria, by labeling the infectious agent with this compound.
