3-Methylbenzothiophene is a heterocyclic compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria. 3-Methylbenzothiophene is a sterically hindered, acidic molecule with the potential to act as an electron acceptor. It can be synthesized by desulfurization of benzothiophene, which is achieved by treatment with active oxygen and sulfoxides. 3-Methylbenzothiophene can also be synthesized from naphthalene through oxidation and reduction reactions. The antimicrobial effects of 3-methylbenzothiophene are most likely due to the oxidative effects on DNA synthesis and protein production in bacterial cells.
3-Methylbenzothiophene has been shown to inhibit the growth of Gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis, but not Gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aerugin
