5-Methoxyisatin is a natural product that has been found to have significant cytotoxic activity against cancer cells. It is a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan, which is converted to 5-methoxyisatin by hydrochloric acid and other enzymes. The cytotoxicity of 5-methoxyisatin has been shown in vitro using the turbidimetric method, which measures the rate of cell growth and survival. This compound also has acidic properties and can be used as an analytical reagent for measuring pH levels in a solution. 5-Methoxyisatin may inhibit cancer cell proliferation by binding to DNA at specific sites, such as on histones or on DNA bases, and preventing transcriptional activation.
