2-(Methylthio)benzaldehyde is a colorless liquid that is soluble in organic solvents. It has a melting point of -68°C and a boiling point of 216°C. The chemical can be synthesized by the reductive elimination of benzyl mercaptan with a gold electrode as the reducing agent. 2-Methylthiobenzaldehyde has been shown to react with various substances, such as β-unsaturated ketones and alkene, to form dihedral compounds. In addition, it can react with diphosphine to produce catalytic asymmetric reductions.
