Melicopine is a natural compound that belongs to the acridone family. It is the first acridone derivative with locomotor activity. Melicopine has been shown to have antioxidant properties and inhibit transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in vitro. This anti-cancer drug also inhibits growth of cervical cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis and inhibit cell proliferation. Melicopine has also been shown to inhibit the growth of plant cancer cells by inducing cell death via necrosis or apoptosis, depending on the dose used. Melicopine's cytotoxic effects are not limited to tumor cells and it also shows toxicity against non-transformed cells, suggesting that this compound may be useful for chemotherapeutic purposes.
